What ever became of the building they were going to put in a German grocery store but they backed out? Around nags head I think on the highway?

I won’t be surprised at another Wawa. Once they get their nose in under the tent they start popping up everywhere in close proximity to each other.

There is a 5 mile stretch in Pa. on route 1 where there are 5 WaWa service centers and one old fashion WaWa.
They have basically driven out all other gas station along this corridor.
Years ago, rumor was WaWa tried to get the old 'Dowdy amusem*nt park, but Nagshead did not agree.
Given the opportunity, they will become the next 'Wings,
Again, I hope Nagshead will not allow another WaWa.

I think the Kelly's location was going to be a Lidl. Then the building design became a problem. Lidl wanted their traditional building with a lot of windows. Nags Head said no: We have hurricane codes here and you have to change your design to meet code. Lidl said screw you and sold, I believe.

I think Lidl still owns it, they just don't use it.

Until the building starts rotting and becoming an eye sore. It's a pretty cool building and should either be restored and used or torn down IMO. Leaving the building there "empty" is not doing anyone any good. Maybe it's already too far gone as it's been vacant for a long time now.

That's not true, They are doing well around the country. However, I think Aldi is doing better.

Anyone who buys the place and expects to do anything with the building should make it a point to talk with Mike Kelly first. He had some serious problems with the building from the time he bought it in the 80s and for years afterwards. 5 acres is a big hunk of land on the bypass, and at that price, why even bother with an old building. It might even be more attractive to a potential buyer if the owner would just get rid of the building now.

This Facebook post was exactly what popped in my head and prompted me to respond. I saw that the other day and never knew it had a glass top originally. In those days I was young and my family went to Hatteras and didn't pay it any mind. I love seeing Walter's old pics and history posts.

This Facebook post was exactly what popped in my head and prompted me to respond. I saw that the other day and never knew it had a glass top originally. In those days I was young and my family went to Hatteras and didn't pay it any mind. I love seeing Walter's old pics and history posts.

I thought it was a problem with numerous leaks rather than temperature control that required removing the glass pyramid.

My instinct that Lidl's sold was right.

And for half of what they paid for it. Wow!
