Hilarious name, depressing condition. Yes, this is a real thing and I'm so thankful I discovered that, since I thought I was the only one experiencing it and was beginning to feel like a freak. If you've never heard of it, it's an intense feeling of uncontrollable sadness during nipple stimulation. (For me, breastfeeding) What I experience is a nauseating, homesick type feeling while I'm nursing, similar to the way I felt my first week away at summer camp in the 4th grade. I'm not going to stop breastfeeding, but it's an awful feeling for me, especially during night feedings. It causes me an intense feeling of loneliness. I wish my nipples would cheer up already! Anyone else in the same boat?

omg! I am so glad you posted this! I experience this! it is awful and made me feel so bad because nursing is supposed to this wonderful bonding time and I just didn't feel that way :( I am still breastfeeding and I think knowing this will help me thank you again for posting.

@rcb357,
No problem! Sorry to hear you're struggling, too. At least you know you're not alone!

Any kind of nipple stimulation has triggered this for me since I was a teenager (years before I had a baby). It's the weirdest sensation. I feel so homesick and empty. It usually ends as soon as the stimulation ends.
I dreaded breastfeeding with my first because I already knew what my reaction was going to be. BUT, after a few weeks the feeling went away when I breastfed and I only got it when I pumped. And I was able to stave that off a little by watching tv every time I pumped. Anyway, I breastfed for 10 months (milk supply ran low after that) and for the majority of that time breastfeeding was a wonderful bonding experience for me and baby!
Weirdly any nipple stimulation other than breastfeeding still triggered sad nipple syndrome though. Right now I've been trying nipple stimulation to trigger labor and it makes me feel absolutely terrible, ha.

@Jnscho1,
yeah it seriously sucks even before I was pregnant of my husband stimulated my nipples it made me feel bad :( and I never understood why till now and breastfeeding has been so hard and then feeling down on top of normal feeding issues has been rough though knowing it's a thing and I am not alone helps me get into a mindset to deal with it :)

Holy crap! I thought it was the only one! I had my first 7 years ago and I endured this. I had ppd so i thought it was that. same with my second child who is 16 months. it was such a weird feeling I never told anyone how I felt when I nursed for either child. I finally told my husband with my June baby that's how I felt. I never knew there was a name for it. I just figured it was from my ppd!

I experienced this with my first baby!! So bizarre! I felt better when I realized it wasn't just me! As time when by I felt it less when breastfeeding, it was mainly when pumping. I actually grew to hate pumping:) I EBF for about 6 months then supplemented with a little formula. I still really enjoyed breastfeeding. I think I just got used to the sad/homesick feeling. Or maybe after while your brain makes positive associations along with it so it isn't as bad.

If you only get it with breastfeeding it might be DMER which I think is slightly different from what I have. Google it, its fascinating! I'm so glad the internet exists, it always lets me know I'm not the only one!!!

ok, I don't get sad but I hate having my nipples touched, even if I touch them to try to trigger labour after a few mins they hurt.
as a result...i was only able to breast feed for less than a month because of the excruciating pain involved... I want to be able to breast feed this time longer with out this pain.
lactation burst specialist always go straight to the assumption that ur having a latch problem and haven't really listened and heard me when I try to explain they hurt even when I just touch them for a few minutes gently it's always been like that. they are always too busy trying to convince me it's to do with latching and will get better.
any one else experience this? ideas? help?
I did get nipple shields this time and I have been putting nursing balm on a fee times a day. I'm 32 weeks preg currently.
I fear that it will still end up hurting a lot even if I always use nipple shields?

I started noticing it more now that my fiancé and I have started trying for a baby. I just get so sad and feel so empty inside.
