Supergirl Star Faces Legal Trouble Following Driving Incident
It's not uncommon for actors to face repercussions for their actions, and the latest news about a star from Supergirl brings this into sharp focus. According to a recent report, actor Matthias Schoenaerts has landed himself in legal hot water in the Netherlands.
As reported by VRTNWS, Schoenaerts has received a sentence of six months in prison, a hefty €4,000 fine, and a one-year suspension from driving due to operating a vehicle without a valid license. This verdict was handed down by the police court in Beringen. The trouble started last week in Pelt, where he was reportedly arrested after allegedly refusing to undergo a breathalyzer test. Notably, Schoenaerts is slated to portray Krem of the Yellow Hills in the upcoming Supergirl movie, as confirmed by Deadline.
The specifics surrounding his arrest shed further light on the situation. On April 5 and April 21, 2024, police pulled over Schoenaerts while he was riding his motorbike in Pelt and discovered that he was driving without a valid license. His driving privileges had been revoked in Antwerp back in September 2021 due to a previous incident involving drug use while driving. He was required to complete mandatory 'recovery tests' and exams, which he unfortunately did not fulfill.
This isn’t the first instance of traffic-related offenses for Schoenaerts; reports indicate he has been convicted 11 times in total. He has received a sentence of six months' imprisonment in absentia in prior rulings. VRTNWS further clarifies that in addition to his prison sentence, he will face that €4,000 fine, a one-year driving ban, and will need to retake all of his driving tests. While he is expected to serve time, it’s worth noting that the enforcement of this sentence may not be immediate, and he retains the option to appeal.
Just a week before this latest incident, Schoenaerts had already been stopped by police, where it was reported that he exhibited uncooperative behavior and once again failed to provide a valid driving license.
So far, there has been no official response from DC Studios co-presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran regarding the implications of Schoenaerts' legal troubles on the Supergirl project. With production officially completed, it appears that his role in the film remains unaffected.
The upcoming film, based on Tom King's 2022 comic book *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, aims to build on the ongoing evolution of the *DC Universe** as it ventures into its "Gods and Monsters" phase. The official synopsis reveals an exciting adventure:
"During her 21st birthday celebration, Kara Zor-El journeys across the galaxy with her dog Krypto, where she encounters Ruthye Marye Knoll and embarks on a vengeful quest."
Milly Alcock will return to portray Kara Supergirl Zor-El as she confronts the next formidable villain in the DC Universe.
Mark your calendars! Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2026.
