Vanderbilt football 34, Virginia Tech 27: Highlights from Week 1 game (2024)

Vanderbilt football defeated Virginia Tech in overtime in the season opener at FirstBank Stadium, 34-27.

The Commodores took the lead with a Diego Pavia touchdown run from four yards out in overtime. They stopped Virginia Tech in fourth down to secure the win.

Pavia was 12-for-16 for 190 yards passing and two touchdowns. He also ran for 120 yards (not including sacks) and one touchdown.

Vanderbilt won its first game over a power conference opponent since 2022 with the victory.

The Commodores are continuing to play at FirstBank Stadium amid ongoing construction.

Vanderbilt 27, Virginia Tech 27: Brock Taylor missed field goal

Vanderbilt drove down the field and had a chance to win the game with a field goal, but Brock Taylor missed the 43-yard kick to send the game into overtime.

Vanderbilt 27, Virginia Tech 27: Sedrick Alexander 8-yard rush

Vanderbilt's Sedrick Alexander caught a lateral pass from Diego Pavia from eight yards out to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

Virginia Tech 27, Vanderbilt 20: Kyron Drones 62-yard touchdown pass

Drones connected on yet another deep shot to take the lead for Virginia Tech in the fourth quarter with 4:21 remaining.

Vanderbilt 20, Virginia Tech 20: Kyron Drones 11-yard touchdown pass

Virginia Tech once again connected on a deep shot and that eventually led to the 11-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

Third quarter

Vanderbilt 20, Virginia Tech 13: John Love 38-yard field goal

The Hokies drove down the field thanks in part to a Langston Patterson Vandthe passer penalty, but Khordae Sydnor sacked Kyron Drones on third down to force the kick.

Vanderbilt 20, Virginia Tech 10: Brock Taylor 53-yard field goal

Vanderbilt was originally set to attempt the long field goal and Taylor missed the kick, but the Commodores were called for a delay of game on the play. Vanderbilt brought out Jesse Mirco to punt, but Virginia Tech was flagged for having two players wearing No. 0. After that five-yard penalty, the Commodores opted to try the field goal again, which Taylor made.

Third quarter

Vanderbilt 17, Virginia Tech 10: Bhayshul Tuten 24-yard touchdown

The Hokies connected on two deep shots in the drive and then capped it off with a rushing touchdown.

Second quarter

Vanderbilt 17, Virginia Tech 3: John Love 40-yard field goal

The Hokies drove down to the Vanderbilt red zone but got pushed back by a holding penalty. Ultimately, Virginia Tech settled for the field goal, with the score that held until halftime.

Vanderbilt 17, Virginia Tech 0: Sedrick Alexander 7-yard run

Vanderbilt chewed 7:14 of game clock in an 80-yard touchdown drive capped off by Alexander's touchdown run.

Vanderbilt 10, Virginia Tech 0: Diego Pavia pass to Quincy Skinner

On the first play of the second quarter, Pavia found Skinner in the end zone for a touchdown pass. This was after Pavia had converted a 4th-and-1 on a quarterback run earlier in the frame.

First quarter

Vanderbilt 3, Virginia Tech 0: Glenn Seabrooks interception

Vanderbilt 340-pound freshman defensive lineman Glenn Seabrooks intercepted a Kyron Drones pass that was tipped by linebacker Bryan Longwell, setting the Commodores up at Virginia Tech's 27-yard line.

Vanderbilt 3, Virginia Tech 0: Brock Taylor 43-yard field goal

After running over six-and-a-half minutes off the clock in their opening drive, the Commodores started off the scoring with a Brock Taylor field goal. Diego Pavia ran for 23 yards on the opening drive and Quincy Skinner made a 31-yard catch on a third-and-long.
